Screamin’ Papas

January 12, 2012

What would you do if I asked you to come with me?
Would you come?
What if you had no idea where I was going.
Would you laugh at me?
What if it meant leaving your career.
Would you do it?
What if you had to leave your family.
Would you even consider it?

I hope your answer is no.

Which is why this (almost flippant) passage shocked the mess out of me…
Matthew 4:21-22
~ Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

That’s it.
Like it was no big deal.
Of course. James and John would follow.
I mean, why wouldn’t they?
It’s not like they left everything promised to them.
Their future, their family, their security.
If all else fails, they’ll just run out and grab another job… right?

The verse says “immediately they left the boat and their father”.

What it should have said is “without even thinking about it they left their careers, their responsibilities and left the life they were raised for. They took they took the inheritance, traditions and expectations of their family and threw them back in the boat with their dad.”

I wonder if he yelled at them as they wadded away from their entire lives…
If he called after them “What about you’re mother?!”…
I wonder if they even paused to reconsider…

What if they had decided to stay?
Would it have been just James and John losing out?
Or would it have been you and I losing out?…

Decisions are rarely easy.
But when it comes to choosing God or pleasing your father… the pressure can be rather intense.

They left it all for a man, calling from the shore.
I wonder what their father was calling…
I’m thankful they didn’t listen.

wow – I never thought of it this way. Sometimes it’s easy for us to say it was easy for THEM to follow – after all it was Jesus Christ! But they didn’t know that – they didn’t know what WE Know! And yet they took this HUGE leap of faith! wow – so good!
